Independent product review from Adele Crozier founder of Playful Learners.
Play and exploration can both be accommodated with this intriguing light station. Whether children want to observe colour, the effect of light, symmetry and reflection, this resource is sure to illuminate their thinking.
This versatile light box incorporates storage and can also be used as a room divider. The unit is supplied with 3 clear tubs (wicker baskets are available separately) and features a mirrored back panel with display surface on the reverse.
We have recently started to adapt our ‘Little Explorers’ setting to incorporate features used in the Reggio Emilia approach found around the world. We did this by:
- Creating a free flowing environment between our inside and outside space.
- Adding child safe mirrors around the room to allow more light and allow the children to watch their own investigations take place.
- Adapting our teaching technique by standing back and allowing the children to learn more through their own exploration and even mistakes.
The Investigation Station was quite a big and exciting choice for us at Little Explorers. It is now a key feature in our main room and is used daily by the children. Our day-time children (aged between 15 month – 2 year and 8 months) love to watch themselves in the mirror and are completely fascinated by the light!
The light table has become a much loved resource in my home setting. The table is made from quality materials and the light is at just the right level for the children to use without it glaring into their eyes. The mirror is made of safety glass which can be scratched quite easily however that’s safety mirrors for you! The storage underneath is extremely useful as it keeps the room tidy and gives the children easy access to the toys.

The Investigation Station:Lightbox is available from Designs For Education for £450.00.
